Rugby – Boys

About the Club

Mira Costa Boys’ Rugby

The Mira Costa Boys Rugby program is a non-cut physical sports program that supports both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, allowing athletes in every grade to compete and develop their skills to the next level. The team has enjoyed great success over the years, winning 2 Southern California Championships and reaching a #7 national ranking. Last year, Varsity placed 2nd in the SCRIF D2 division and JV finished 5–2. Numerous alumni play at the college and international levels representing the United States. Beyond local games, the team has played abroad in Wales (2018), Spain (2022), Italy (2023) and New Zealand during Spring Break of the 2024–25 school year.

Welcome all new and returning players! Rugby welcomes everyone new and returning for the 2025–2026 school year. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams finished strong last season — capped by an unforgettable trip to New Zealand for some epic international tournaments. The teams are fired up, the rucks are ready, and we’re charging into this season with even more energy!

Rugby is a winter sport that begins immediately following football season. The boys’ and girls’ teams often share practice times and events but play in separate games — the girls’ team plays Rugby 7’s against area high school girls’ teams, and the boys’ team plays Rugby 15’s against area boys’ teams.

Rugby is a winter sport and a no-cut sport. No prior experience is necessary, but it is helpful.

In August, there is a short team meeting for all new and returning players (both boys’ and girls’ teams), where the practice schedule is discussed. Pre-season training begins with the start of the school year, before the official winter season (November–February), on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays starting around 3:30pm (exact time and location TBD).

If you plan to play Rugby and are not playing a Fall Sport, you must register for 7th Period Rugby PE as a class. There are also workouts during the off-season.
