Cross Country

Season Overview

Athletics

Cross Country is both an individual and a team sport. Participants train, compete and are scored as a team, but within that framework runners focus on achieving their own personal goals as developed by their coaches. Throughout the season, runners train 5–6 days per week and participate in Bay League meets as well as invitationals held on picturesque trails and park grounds around Southern California.

MCXC is comprised of Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity categories. MCXC asks for dedication and commitment. In return, runners attain both athletic and personal growth, as well as a valued place among a very special and uniquely bonded team.

Cross Country is a Fall Sport.

Try-outs

Try-out Information

Cross Country is a Fall Sport.

Tryouts (aka the Watermelon Run) are held in mid-August at 7:30am at the West Field at Costa — please arrive by 7am. It is a timed 3-mile course with qualifying times for boys and girls. Questions? Contact Coach Rebecca Kelley at (310) 200-5227.

No prior experience is necessary, but it is strongly recommended that athletes take part in the summer training program. Athletes run Monday–Friday in the early morning before academic summer school (no PE credit for Cross Country summer athletics). Athletes not in summer training must have other distance training in early summer to avoid injury. Mandatory training continues through August, shifting from morning to afternoon just before school starts.

Meets begin in late August and run through early November, with CIF prelims and finals in mid-November for select athletes.

Most distance athletes transfer to Track and Field in the spring. All runners continue training Monday–Friday after the fall season until the end of the semester, unless transferring to a winter sport.
