Basketball – Boys

Season Overview

Athletics

Mira Costa Boys Basketball is a Division 1 powerhouse known for its commitment to excellence, both on and off the court. Led by a dedicated coaching staff, the program fosters a positive and competitive environment for athletes emphasizing the 4 D's: Defense, Dedication, Discipline, and Decisions — the cornerstone of the program's success.

The team has a rich history of Bay League dominance. Most recently the team clinched the 2023 Bay League Championship and secured the title of Semifinalist in the 2023 CIF Division 1 tournament. The Mustangs are fueled by their passionate community, proudly wear Green and Gold, and welcome the community to join in the excitement of the season and become part of a tradition of excellence.

Boys Basketball is a Winter Sport. While the official season takes place in winter, the program remains active year-round with three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Frosh/Soph. Tryouts are scheduled for August, with training beginning in late August and practices three days per week until October 15, including weight training and skill work.

Try-outs

Try-out Information

Boys Basketball is a Winter Sport and a cut sport. There are three tryout periods: in the fall during the first two to three weeks of school, after fall sports end in mid-November, and at the end of spring. Players know right away if they have made the team.

Prior experience helps but is not mandatory.

The season runs November to mid-February. Varsity can play through all of February and potentially into early March, so basketball can be up to an 11-month commitment. Players who make the team are expected to be available during Thanksgiving week and Winter Break, and Varsity players are in playoffs the week of the February break.

There is training and practice in the fall and spring as a 6th period class.

There is a summer MBX program from late June through the end of July. All incoming 9th graders are welcome; 10th–12th graders are invited if they are expected to be on the team the following year. It is not mandatory but most players participate, and the class is offered for PE credit (MBX rules apply on how many days can be missed and still earn credit — three). Frosh players coming into 9th grade will be invited to weekday and weekend games; these are not mandatory but all will be included in some summer games.
