Girls End the Season as the No. 2 Team in SCRIF
The Mira Costa Girls’ Rugby season also came to an end at the SCRIF Championship Tournament at Warren High School last weekend, on February 10, 2024. The first opponent for them was Lakewood. Although the Lancers usually have the Mustangs’ number, the Championship Tournament told a different story. Winger Savannah Swartzlander took a loose ball from 38 meters out and found pay dirt. Team Captain and Scrum Half Allie Lindblad converted for a Costa 7–0 lead. However, the Lakewood girls answered using their traditional power game as they tied the score just before the halftime whistle. The Mustangs came out after the half and took control of the game by using stellar defense. Prop Serena Tavai managed to turn the ball over. That led to a Lakewood penalty, and a quick tap from Fly-half Dora Tuitupou followed by a nifty move and timely off-load to Lindblad for the Costa Try. Lindblad converted to give Costa a 14-7 lead. Lakewood again came back to tie up the match at 14 apiece. The game winner, however, came as a result of the blanket defense by the Mustangs. The Lancers got driven deep into their own side when Costa turned the ball over by Prop Georgia Fluker as she found the Try Zone from 6 meters out for the 19-14 Costa win.
Unfortunately, the match vs. La Costa Canyon went the way of the boys’ match. The only real highlight was an amazing 52 meter run from Team Captain Lindblad. The girls end their season as the No. 2 Team in SCRIF and an 11-10 season record.
